Another Honor for Doyle Brunson As Day 1B of the Main Event Begins

Weeks before the 2013 WSOP living legendDoyle Brunson tweeted his intention to take a pass on this year’s Series. Then the 10-time bracelet winner showed up at the $50,000 Players Championship and there was suddenly a glimmer of hope he’d play the Main Event as well. On Sunday afternoon that glimmer of hope turned into reality as Brunson kicked off Day 1B action with the traditional “Shuffle Up and Deal” call and the WSOP honored him with the unveiling of a bronze bust.

“As we all know, earlier this year Doyle announced he was not going to play WSOP tournaments. A significant milestone, when you consider that for the better part of four decades, he has been the defining face of the World Series of Poker. Bridging the entire time from when this was a small gathering of elite players, to the explosion of the modern era,” said WSOP Executive Director Ty Stewart. “He gave us all a thrill when he decided to play the Poker Players Championship, and we’re even more thrilled to have him with us here today.”

Once Brunson got things underway he took his seat at the ESPN Main Stage table to begin his quest for a third Main Event title.

Brunson Among a Slew of Top Players in Day 1B Field

Even with Main Event action spread among three separate rooms railbirds don’t have to look too hard to find some of their favorite players. Already spotted in the field Sunday were Barry Greenstein, Dan Harrington, John Juanda,  Erik Seidel, Greg Raymer, Scotty Nguyen, David Williams, Dan Smith, Scott Seiver and Andy Frankenberger.

Also in the field are former BLUFF Players of the Year Eugene Katchalov, Jason Mercier and Sorel Mizzi.

Bet Raise Fold star Danielle Andersen, who signed a Main Event sponsorship deal with Full Tilt Poker earlier this week, is also in action.

Rear Naked Chokes Are Not Allowed at the Table

Terrence Chan was once famously told “you’re not Johnny Chan” in reference to him not being the most famous poker player with that surname. Chan, who competes in Mixed Martial Arts and now works for the UFC-owned, is in the field today but sadly he’s not even the best MMA fighter playing. Reigning UFC Welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre is in action, playing under the brand name.
